Moody celebrates America Recycles Day Published Nov. 12, 2013 By Elvis Lane 23d Civil Engineer Squadron MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- As the country celebrates America Recycles Day Nov. 15, Moody will be joining thousands of local communities celebrating the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Today, Americans can recycle a variety of items, including motor oil, tires, aluminum cans, plastic, glass, batteries and building materials. The community effort to recycle these items is designed to make a difference in our environment and help improve quality of life. Overall, the country produces more than 250 million tons of solid waste per year, which is approximately four pounds per person a day. Currently, our national recycling rate is 34.7 percent and our Air Combat Command (ACC) rate here is 32 percent. Moody's goal is to reach 55 percent by 2015. As the amount of garbage grows, so does the need to recycle. Through curb-side collection and recyclable drop-off centers, communities across the nation are demonstrating their commitment to protecting the environment and building a better future. At Moody, members participate in the recycling program in various ways, including collecting paper, cans, plastic, used oil and other recyclable items. America Recycles Day gives Moody a chance to reflect on hard work and join together in an effort to move forward and keep the base and community clean through recycling. The day is just a small reminder of what people should and can accomplish year round. The 23d Civil Engineering Squadron Environmental Flight will sponsor events on Nov. 15, which includes presentations at the Youth Center and Child Development Center. To continue the success of the recycling program, ensure all cans, plastics, cardboard, wood and other recyclable items are put in the proper containers. The Recycle Center is open every day Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to2 p.m. and can be reached at 229-257-1993. For more information please call 229-257-3849.
