The smell of sweet pork and ribs circled the Moody Field Club during a barbecue cook-off and car show June 27.

Twelve grill masters tested their barbecue skills by offering their different recipes for attendees of the event to sample.

"The event was organized to help raise the strong morale we already have here by helping our Moody family," said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Philip Burns, 23d Civil Engineer Squadron fire inspector.

"We often go outside the base to find fun things to take part in," he added. "But in reality, the greatness is here at home, and I'm glad we got to show it today."

After hearing about the cook-off, Clint Roberts and Dave Stone, cast members of the TV show Ax Men, which airs on The History Channel, decided to be judges for the competition.

"I'm glad we can come out here and be judges of some good barbecue," said Roberts, who grew up close to Moody, and he understands the impact the base has on the local community.

"I'm always proud of Moody and what they do for our country," said Roberts. "So being a part of the Flying Tigers today meant a lot to me."

In addition to the cook-off, Moody Airmen showcased their classic and sports cars outside the field club for all to see.

"There's a ton of nice cars out there," said Col. Steven Ramer, 23d Wing vice commander. "Choosing one to win is a tough decision."

After the judging came to a conclusion, Ramer announced the winners of the barbecue cook-off, which went to Team AGOW Style with their barbecue ribs, and the winner of the car show, which went to Master Sgt. John Lamp, 23d Component Maintenance Squadron first sergeant, with his 1951 Chevrolet Bel Air.

To conclude the event, Ramer announced the cook-off will become an annual event for Moody and gave some last-minute remarks.

"I want to thank everyone who came out and took part of this event," he said. "We couldn't have made this a success without the participation from our Moody family."
