The 23rd Security Forces Squadron is kicking of this year's Crime Prevention Month by hosting numerous services and activities on base throughout October.

According to the National Crime Prevention Council, October was designated as the Crime Prevention month in 1984. It was created to recognize and celebrate the practice of crime prevention, while promoting such issues as victimization, volunteerism and creating safer, more caring communities.

"Crime Prevention Month is a great opportunity to promote community awareness to help alleviate victims of crimes," said Tech. Sgt. Edwin Lipp, 23rd SFS. "Drug awareness, child safety, community watch programs, and situational awareness are among some of the issues we will cover during this years Crime Prevention Month."

The month-long celebration includes events such as an Information and Child Identification Card Booth from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 17-20 at the Base Exchange. As well as Operation Identification walking patrols of Base Housing and Dormitories 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 25-26 and a Just Say No to Drugs Poster and Essay contest.

The Just Say No to Drugs Poster and Essay Contest is a co-sponsored event that will be hosted by the 23rd SFS and Moody Youth Center. Children 5-8 will design a poster and ages 9-12 will write an essay. Moody members can contact the Moody Youth Center at 257-3067 for dates and rules.

"We really just want to help remind Airmen and families to stay safe and remain vigilant," said Sergeant Lipp. "October is a perfect time to remind everyone about crime, especially with Halloween approaching."

Sergeant Lipp pointed out that they will also be passing out information on Halloween safety during the Information and Child ID booth.
