All Moody female personnel are invited to attend a free Rape Aggressive Defense Basic Physical Defense class from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Base Chapel.

In total, the class consists of four 3-hour sessions occurring on Oct. 27 and 30, Nov. 3 and 6.

Sixteen slots are available for women to participate. Due to high demand, the 23rd Medical Group Health and Wellness Center will likely create a waiting list and hold the course four times a year.

"We've had a great response to the class," said Tara Vig, 23rd MDG HAWC. "The slots are filling up fast, so if you're interested you better hurry."

According to the RAD Web site, the program teaches realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The RAD System begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance - while progressing to the basics of hands-on defense training.

Though the RAD System features no martial arts training, the class provides a basic overview of useful, realistic self-defense techniques, said Derrick Sinclair, Remerton Police Department investigator and RAD instructor.

"We teach women how to avoid dangerous situations, and how to get out of the situation if it is unavoidable," said Investigator Sinclair. "We don't teach martial arts or how to fight. Instead, we teach how to incapacitate someone and get out of certain holds that an aggressor may use."

He also added a large part of their class overviews situational awareness and identifying danger signs.

"The best way to avoid problems is by recognizing those danger signs and avoiding them all together," said Investigator Sinclair.

The program has steadily progressed in recent years through the contributions of RAD instructors across the U.S. and Canada, according to the RAD Web site. As it stands, more than 250,000 women have attended the RAD course.

"We'd also like to remind women this class is for all skill levels," said Mrs. Vig. "Everyone's welcome to sign up."
