Cyber security vigilance: everyone's responsibility Published June 15, 2009 By 23rd Wing Information Assurance Office MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- As the 23rd Wing continues to prepare for the Operational Readiness Inspection scheduled in September, Moody personnel must constantly be aware of the cyber network on daily basis. Recently, our networks have been compromised by multiple means such as malware hidden in emails, virus-corrupted thumb drives and media moved incorrectly between networks. These events can be prevented with proper vigilance and procedures. Every single person in the Air Force team must make an effort to protect and secure the network protection and security instead of relying on just the communication squadron to fix the problem. "As Airmen, civilians and contractors, we must understand that we all have a responsibility in this cultural change," said General Schwartz, Air Force Chief of Staff. "Every time you use a networked device, you are on patrol for our Nation. You must be alert for and report suspicious emails, websites and suspicious attachments." The proper mindset is to continuously be prepared for threats and vulnerabilities before they occur and make cyber security part of our daily practices. "Mission needs may require you to 'sneaker-net' information, but you must follow safe and approved procedures for moving critical data," said the general. "You must not upload data from personal devices for any reason. While training programs communicate information on network security, we depend on you to execute responsibly. When irresponsible acts occur, I expect commanders to enforce our standards." Our networks are a shared resource and when one person accepts a risk, we all may be exposed to that risk. Our compliance with standards and personal accountability will allow us to defend the network.
