23d Wing Public Affairs
"I became a volunteer firefighter two years ago just because it sounded cool, and I wanted to get involved in helping the community. I was also looking for an adrenaline rush - when somebody calls us for help, we jump in the trucks and go. Our station is one of the busier stations in the area, and most of the calls come in the evening during dinner. It does cut into personal time, but it's 100 percent worth it. The camaraderie at the station is a lot like the military lifestyle - a large majority of the volunteers are or have been active duty military - we spend so much time together training and out on calls, we get to know each other well. Another reason we have such a strong brotherhood is because our station chief and assistant chief really do a great job of pulling us together as a team, and we really look up to them as leaders."
