500 acre Grassy Pond now open for all Published Jan. 30, 2015 By Airman Greg Nash 23d Wing Public Affairs MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- Grassy Pond extended its services to the public Jan. 5 at Lake Park, Ga. The 500 acre recreation area opened to the public in an effort to enhance community relations and increase revenue that will help sustain and enhance the Grassy Pond property. "As the Air Force continues to recognize the needs of military installations and adjacent communities, they are supportive of partnership opportunities that lend to mission viability and mutually beneficial projects," said Adrienne Wilkerson, 23d FSS marketing director. "Opening Grassy Pond to the public provides a great platform to accomplish both goals. From the response we've seen in a short period of time, we believe the public is and will be excited to take part in the services offered at the facility." The goal is to help sustain and enhance the facility with the participation of the public and the continued help of military visitors, who are still our number one priority, said Nikki Bennett, 23d FSS community services flight chief. She also said that while they are working to enhance the facility there are still a lot of activities being offered and plans for future activities. "We want visitors to discover Grassy Pond, which is similar to a state park with cabins, RV sites, tent sites, group shelters, a boat area, nature trails, grills and other amenities," Bennett said. "In the future we are hoping to have activities such as mini golf, zip lines, splash pads and enhancing the cabins. We want to make it more than just people thinking of taking their family to the cabin; we have actual events coming up as well as the activities that we already have to offer daily." Upcoming events include a Cupid's cabin for Department of Defense card holders, an April fool's day campout and an egg hunt, and Grassy Pond spring open house April 4, with free entry for service members and civilians. "It has been a longstanding practice of Moody Air Force Base to cultivate great relationships with its civilian neighbors and this initiative is no different," Wilkerson said. "Moody is excited to welcome all visitors from South Georgia, North Florida and surrounding counties. Park entry is free for Military/DoD card holders, and $5 per vehicle up to six passengers and $2 per each additional person for the public." "Grassy Pond has been a part of Moody's history for decades, now it will be etched into the history of the community as well." Wilkerson said.
