As summer comes to an end and temperatures start to cool down, Moody's Indoor Pool is slated to open as an alternate workout resource during colder months on Sept. 8, here.

The pool offers lap swimming and swim lessons to all Department of Defense cardholders Monday through Thursday. Personnel from the facility also schedule sessions to units for aquatic training.

"They seem to find [the indoor pool] better than the outdoor pool because it's bigger, warmer and not as crowded," said Kevin Dorsey, 23d Force Support Squadron lead lifeguard. "A lot of people want to swim for training and exercising."

Although most people consider swimming a leisure activity, swimming burns more calories than running because it engages every muscle in your body and uses them simultaneously.

"Swimming is beneficial for your body in many different aspects including strength building, endurance, recovery and leisure," said Audrey Goodale, 23d FSS aquatics manager. "The neat thing is that it is extremely low-impact."

People may choose swimming over running for reasons such as competing, rehabilitation and training. Moody's survival, evasion, resistance and escape specialists use the pool for mission essential aquatic training that could save lives.

"We conduct [monthly] water-survival training for all of the aircrew on Moody at the indoor pool," said Tech. Sgt. Daniel Wiggins, 347th Operations Support Squadron SERE specialist. "It gives the aircrew the chance to get back into their survival equipment and refresh them on their tactical technique procedures."

The indoor offers lap swim Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and is closed Friday through Sunday.  The facility also offers swim lessons Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
