AVON PARK AIR FORCE RANGE, Fla. -- A wildfire covering approximately 3,000 acres is currently burning within the boundaries of the Avon Park Air Force Range. The fire was ignited by a lightning strike on the evening of May 5 and has grown due to storm activity and erratic winds throughout the day on May 6.
Wildland Fire crews from Avon Park Air Force Range, alongside the Air Force burn crew, are actively working to control the blaze. Full containment is anticipated by Thursday, May 8, 2025.
The wildfire remains confined to an isolated area within the range and poses no threat to the public at this time. However, residents in surrounding communities may notice smoke in the area. If individuals experience smoke in their neighborhoods, they are encouraged to report it to local authorities and take appropriate safety measures to avoid smoke inhalation.
Prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke can have adverse health effects. Community members are urged to monitor local air quality alerts and take necessary precautions.
