The U.S. Air Force reactivated the 23d Munitions Squadron at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, July 1, 2021.

The 23d MUNS will be directly assisting with the management of a $58 million munitions mission set for the 23d Wing.

“The 23d Wing is gaining a unit whose sole focus is managing and utilizing Moody’s lethal assets and storage requirements,” said Capt. Jose Rodriguez-Perez, 23d MUNS munitions operations officer. “With the reactivation of this organization, Moody also gains a dedicated commander support staff and a munitions and missile maintenance commander, giving our base additional munitions leadership knowledge.”

The new commander shared his thoughts with his fellow 23d MUNS Airmen during the assumption of command ceremony.
“I am sincerely and deeply humbled to serve as your first squadron commander,” said Maj. William Hinchey, 23d MUNS commander. “No doubt the work you do every day strikes fear in the hearts of our nation's adversaries. You provide the lethal effect which ensures our wing can attack, rescue and prevail to win today's fight. You truly give the Flying Tigers their teeth.”

The activation of the 23d MUNS is intended to allow for a more agile and streamlined management of assets.

“Standing up the 23d MUNS will enhance the readiness, mobility and lethality of munitions through a single line of command and control,” said Rodriguez-Perez.

Rodriguez-Perez said the benefits of focusing exclusively on munitions inside the new squadron include increased attention on their specific missions. Simplifying squadron management makes it easier to focus on people and issues and improves coordination between the other maintenance and operations support squadrons.

The activation of the 23d MUNS has been in the works since 2019, when former Chief of Staff of the Air Force, retired Gen. David Goldfein, prioritized the revitalization and empowerment of squadrons.

The 23d MUNS was originally established Jan. 1, 1957, at Loring Air Force Base, Maine, as the 23d Aviation Depot Squadron and was in service until July 1, 1977, when it was deactivated at England Air Force Base, Louisiana. After 44 years of dormancy, the 23d MUNS will now be joining Moody in its effort to push agile combat employment concepts to the forefront of its warfighting future.
