Whether someone needs a bouncy house for a party, a customized going-away gift for a teammate or free car-maintenance assistance, The SHOP can make it happen.

The SHOP provides Department of Defense cardholders a wide array of services through one of their four facilities.

“The SHOP consists of a (plaque and frame) shop, wood shop, auto shop, and equipment rental,” said Breanna Young, 23d Force Support Squadron recreation assistant. “We also have outdoor recreation, which consists of planning trips like skydiving, camping and kayaking.”

For those who are not interested in taking on the skies, The SHOP houses a place for patrons to get their hands dirty.

The auto shop offers two self-help bays to maintain their personal vehicles in addition to free hands-on assistance from a certified mechanic Monday through Friday. There are also free oil changes provided to deployed spouses through the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

“I did not know anything about car maintenance before joining the military eight years ago,” said Staff Sgt. Tyrone Roberts, 723d Aircraft Maintenance Squadron command support staff NCO in charge. “Since I’ve been stationed at Moody, I have learned how to (complete) an oil change and change my tires. I can come here and utilize all the tools I need because (the Auto Shop) is available to me, and if I need assistance, (the mechanic) helps me out.”

Those who prefer the smell of sawdust to motor oil may find themselves at home with the wood shop.

They are responsible for a project library with more than 500 plans available for use and creating customized wooden products to include awards and retirement shadowboxes. The plaque and frame shop engraves all of the wings’, groups’ and squadrons’ quarterly and annual awards in addition to other personalized products to include picture framing, needlework and more.

Young said that the wood shop staff have the ability to cut the wood, sand it down and polish it to give the final product the shine it deserves.

Lastly, The SHOP is home to equipment rental. DoD cardholders are able to rent out a variety of items such as camping equipment, tents and more.

“For personal rentals, you can come in and rent equipment for an hourly or daily rate,” Young said. “If you have a squadron event, you can type up a memorandum form with all of the equipment needed and the date of pick-up and drop-off, and you’re able to rent the chairs and tables or sports equipment for free. Also, we have bouncy houses, snow cone machines and popcorn machines for parties.”

The SHOP is a place that continuously works to satisfy individual customers as well as collaborate to contribute resources to help make Moody events happen.
“We are in support of a lot of events,” Young said. “An award ceremony (requires) engraving to make the awards. Then, equipment rental can rent out the tables and chairs needed for the ceremony. It’s a breath of fresh air to supply ceremonies (and other events) because we’re here to make those events possible.”
