Beginning June 4, every driver entering Moody Air Force Base will be required to hand over a valid identification card to a gate security official.

The hands-on checks are designed to increase Moody's force protection levels, said 2nd Lt. Phillip Ferris, 23rd Security Forces Squadron operations officer.

"Now that vehicles are no longer required to have base decals, the wing commander has required a 100 percent inspection of each drivers ID," said Lieutenant Ferris. "During the day, drivers will be the only ones required to produce a card, but from 6 p.m.-6 a.m., every person in the vehicle will be required to hand over identification for inspection."

The changes aren't a radical departure from the way Moody was previously handling security, said Lieutenant Ferris. The major difference is in the words "hands-on."

"You used to be able to show your card in a protective sleeve or in your wallet," he said. "Now, the guard will be asking you to remove it so he can inspect both sides for all of its authenticators and ensure it's a valid identification."

The safety and security of our Airmen and base assets must be our primary concern, said Col. Kenn Todorov, 23rd Wing commander.

"USProtect continues to do a great job securing the gates for Team Moody," said Colonel Todorov. "This change gives guards another opportunity to detect an unauthorized entry and deter possible intrusions or hostile acts."
