Moody prepares for holiday dangers with base-wide Safety Day Published Oct. 29, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Spencer Gallien 23rd Wing Public Affairs MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- To prepare Moody Airmen for the upcoming holiday season, the 23rd Wing Safety Office will hold a Safety Day Nov. 7 at the Base Theater. Throughout the day, Moody units will be invited to watch a 60-minute presentation by Street Smart, which presents a first-responder view of accidents caused by alcohol. "The Street Smart safety program focuses on preventing driving under the influence and under-age drinking," said Staff Sgt. Antonio Williams, 23rd WG NCO in-charge of Ground Safety. "The presentations also provide information and demonstrate the serious consequences of poor decision making. They illustrate real life experiences to show Airmen the outcome of conscientious and responsible decisions," he said. "The goal is to reduce and eliminate trauma-related deaths and injuries of young adults due to their high-risk behaviors, not only at Moody but nationwide." A wide variety of information booths will also be available outside the base theatre, with topics ranging from requirements using cell phones while driving to preventing fires created by Christmas lights. "Due to our younger Airmen's involvement in high-risk activities, attendance is mandatory for Staff Sergeant and below, and any Airman below 26 years old," said Joseph Bell, 23rd WG Ground Safety manager. "We really want to instruct Airmen on compliance and let them know rules are here for safety and survival. By deviating from the rules, Airmen are setting themselves up for failure or serious injury." Labor Day marked the end of the 101 Critical Days of Summer--one of the most dangerous times of the year, said Mr. Bell. However, the holiday season is about to begin and is just as dangerous. The extra emphasis on the summer months can sometimes overshadow other seasonal dangers, said Lt. Col. Jason Hanover, 23rd WG Safety chief. "We concentrate so much on the 101 Critical Days of Summer, we tend to forget the holiday season," said Colonel Hanover. "During the holidays there are just as many threats as the summer months. We want to give Airmen the tools to recognize and prevent these dangers." For shift workers and Airmen who cannot be at the Nov. 7 showings, a performance is scheduled at 4 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Base Theater. In case of inclement weather, the alternate location for outdoor Safety Day information booths is the Freedom I Fitness Center. The following groups are scheduled for safety briefings at the designated times below: 23rd Fighter Group, 347th Rescue Group and 23rd Medical Group at 7:30 a.m. 23rd Mission Support Group and tenant organizations at 9:30 a.m. 23rd Maintenance Group and 23rd MDG at 1 p.m. 820th Security Forces Group and 23rd MDG at 3 p.m.
