During the 2008 Super Sports Day Oct. 17, Moody squadrons competed in several sporting activities to earn bragging rights and an overall first place trophy.

The annual event, which lasted from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., featured 25 sporting activities that occurred simultaneously throughout the day. Airmen, civilian employees and dependents over 18 years old were part of approximately 2,000 participants who showed off their athletic skills.

"It was a great day for Moody personnel to build espirit de corps," said Tammy Turnmeyer, Freedom I Fitness Center director who has also been organizing the event for the past eight years. "Squadrons were able to work together as a team, demonstrate being fit to fight and have fun."

Some of the sporting events included a sports fishing competition at Grassy Pond, men's and women's tug of-war, and the Chiefs vs. Eagles softball game, where chief master sergeants took on colonels.

Airman 1st Class Xavier Baker, 23rd Wing client support administrator, represented the 23rd Force Support Squadron and participated in several events including free throw shooting, three-point shoot-out, men's 100-yard dash and men's three-on-three basketball.

"I chose to be involved in many of the events because it's an opportunity to contribute to my squadron," said Airman Baker. "Plus, it's good competition and an overall morale-boosting day."

Squadrons earned points for participating in each event as well as additional points for placing first, second or third. Individuals who volunteered at the events also earned points for their squadron.

"As soon as each competition ends, score-keepers bring results back to the main tallying board," said Mrs. Turnmeyer. "By the end of the day, people got so excited that they gathered around the board waiting for the final results."

The squadron with the most cumulative points earns the coveted trophy as well as the right to boast about being the most athletic squadron.

This year's winners were the 23rd Medical Group, with the 23rd Civil Engineer Squadron as the first runner-up and 23rd FSS as the second runner-up.

In addition to the Super Sports day trophy, the Commander's trophy was presented to the squadron who earned the most points participating and winning sporting events throughout the whole year. The male and female athletes of the year were also recognized.

"The day turned out to be a success," said Mrs. Turnmeyer. "It was good to see Airmen competing for their squadron and having fun at the same time."
