The event will conclude Retiree Appreciation Week and is designed to give thanks to those who served before us, said Capt. Steven Dezell, Retiree Appreciation Week 2008 project officer. Many on-base facilities will host specials throughout the day of appreciation - including $1.25 bowling games and shoe rentals, a Commissary case lot sale, $20 for a day of golf including cart, and free tire rotations at auto skills. A free lunch will be served at the picnic area outside the Freedom I Fitness Center. The picnic area will also feature games of horseshoes, pinochle, hearts, spades and bingo. The day will begin with welcoming remarks by Col. Kenneth Todorov, 23rd Wing Commander, followed by briefings from TRICARE, Army Air Force Exchange Services, the Commissary and the Veterans Assistance program. The day's events also include a health and information fair where retirees can obtain blood pressure, optometry and cholesterol screenings and talk to representatives from the Base Exchange, Veteran's Affairs service center and the 23rd Wing Legal and Finance offices. "We'll also have a lot more static displays this year," said Captain Dezell. "Displays will include a HC-130P King, HH-60G Pavehawk helicopter and an A-10C Thunderbolt II. "There will also be a crash recovery trailer, ammunitions trailer, air ground equipment munitions trailer, security forces working dog demonstration and an up-armored HUMVEE static display," he added. The static displays will be located at the Fuels Barn, building 646. Additionally, buses will provide retirees with a driving tour of the base in 15-20 minute increments beginning at the Freedom I Fitness Center. The tour includes stops at the static displays and identification card building. "We host this event every year to show our appreciation for all the sacrifices past servicemembers have made," said Captain Dezell.
