Moody Airman dies following training exercise Published Jan. 21, 2009 By 23rd Wing Public Affairs MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- A 30-year-old male Airman on a temporary duty assignment to Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, as a combat control apprentice died Jan. 12 at Wilford Hall Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas. Staff Sgt. Kenneth Wilburn lost consciousness while participating in an above-water treading exercise at a Lackland Air Force Base training pool Jan. 9. Emergency life-saving procedures were administered on the scene and he was immediately transported to Wilford Hall Medical Center where he never regained consciousness. Sergeant Wilburn was permanently assigned to Moody's 820th Security Forces Group as a training NCO. "Sergeant Wilburn was a true Air Force combat leader and warrior," said Col. Donald Derry, 820th SFG commander. "He was also a U.S. Army trained and qualified Air Force Airborne Ranger and an Air Force Pre-Ranger instructor. "Jason did everything in his life with awe inspiring drive, intensity and dedication," he added. "Most importantly, he based every decision on what was best for his family and country. He was a great Airman and will be missed by all." A memorial service for Sergeant Wilburn is scheduled for 9 a.m. Jan. 30 at the Moody Air Force Base Chapel.
