After more than a year's worth of planning and renovation, the newly relocated base library opened Jan. 20 at Moody's Learning Resource Center located in building 328.

The new Base Library now features a story time and a special events room, a quiet room, a teen's corner, study cubicles and a group study room. The renovations include additional rooms, new modern shelves and furniture.

"It's great to finally settle in our new space," said Holly May, Base Library director. "I can't wait to see and hear the reactions from people when they see everything that's new at the library."

"We received tons of new shelves, which are more functional because they are specifically designed for the items they hold," she said. "It will now be easier for people to browse for books, magazines and especially DVDs."

Most of the library's sections have been re-arranged due to the renovations. However, these changes will likely lead to a more positive library experience, said Erin Connolly, head Base Library clerk.

"It's a much better environment to work in," she said. "Since I'm also a storyteller, it's great to now have a story time room."

"I love the big circulation desk and I'm able to greet everyone who comes in through the lobby," she added. "The addition of windows makes the space open and cheerful."

In addition to functional improvements, the library features new wall colors and decorations to enhance the facility's appearance.

"We were aiming for a sleek, bistro look with a black and green color palette," said Ms. May. "I'm hoping the overall look should appeal to more people who come and enjoy their time at the library."

A newer, larger book drop-off will also be placed across the street beside Robinson Road located near the running trail parking lot.

"The previous drop-off only had room for books," said Ms. May. "Now there's room for DVDs, educational materials and other audio and visual items.

An open house for the new Base Library is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 26. Refreshments will be served and face painting will be available for children from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Command leadership will also tour the facility for the first time on this day.

"We're very lucky to have the funding and support from Colonel Todorov and our leadership," said Ms. May. "Not to mention, the entire library staff worked really hard to make this facility functional and inviting.

"It's not just a place where you can check out books--it's a place to come relax and be comfortable," she added.
