In order to encourage children to be more physically active, Moody's Youth Center offers two dance classes available throughout the week.

The center's dance classes include ballet and jazz, which are open to children ages three and older.

Whitney Barton, wife of Staff Sgt. James Barton, 23rd Equipment Maintenance Squadron, is the new dance instructor for both classes.

"The classes teach the children discipline and coordination," said Mrs. Barton. "It offers them different avenues to express themselves and encourages them to be physically active."

Ballet and jazz class schedules are as follows: ages three and four are held on Mondays from 3 to 4 p.m., ages five and six are held on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., ages seven and up are held on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

"Students will learn the basic and advanced dance terminology, movement and performances in a noncompetitive environment," said Nikki Bennett, the center's youth programs director. "They will also learn music appreciation and the value of teamwork as they prepare for recitals."

Fall dance classes are offered from August through December and a winter recital is held at the end of the season. Spring dance classes are offered from January through May and also end with a spring recital. This year's spring recital is scheduled for May 9.

Throughout the summer months, there are also week-long camps for those interested in gaining exposure to dance as a recreation choice, said Mrs. Bennett.

Depending on age and skill, the cost to sign-up for each class varies from $30 to $60. Parents interested in registering their children can call 257-3067. Registration ends March 17.

"We offer the same quality classes as downtown programs without the hassle of time and travel," said Mrs. Bennett. "We hold classes here on base to help make it easier for parents."

"We're also very excited to have Mrs. Barton as our new instructor," she added. "Our classes allow children to explore options of creativity--dance may be one of them."
