A military identification card overhaul that began in 2008 is scheduled to start the second phase of a three-phase process in 2009.

The Department of Defense is currently working on providing more secure Common Access Cards and Teslin Cards by removing all Social Security numbers from ID cards.

"We are currently between the first and second phase of the process," said Jim Petersen, 23rd Wing Military Personnel Flight site manager. "By the end of 2010, all three phases should be complete."

The first phase included the removal of all dependent SSNs from Teslin cards. The second phase will remove all sponsor SSNs from the Teslin ID card and truncate the SSN to show the last four digits of an individuals SSN on the CAC. In the final phase, all SSNs will then be removed from the barcodes on the back of the CAC.
