Moody's base force protection squadron was recently selected as one of Air Combat Command's top security forces unit for 2008.

The 23rd Security Forces Squadron earned the ACC Active Duty Medium Security Forces Unit award and will also be competing for the Air Force-level award.

"It was an exciting moment when we received the good news about our recent award," said Chief Master Sgt. Dawna Cnota, 23rd SFS manager. "I'm extremely proud of everyone who worked hard and contributed to earning one of the highest honors."

This was the first year the 23rd SFS won the award since being realigned to Moody from Pope Air Force Base, N.C.

The squadron, which has approximately 135 military and civilian personnel as well as 40 contract guards, competed against five other bases within the major command. Units were judged by their overall accomplishments, as well as the accomplishments of unit members.

"Our squadron did a fantastic job showing we were a well-rounded unit," said Chief Cnota. "The award validates what we do and it doesn't change the fact that we still provide home station law enforcement.

"We have the responsibility to secure a base," she added. "Our job enables people to complete the mission without the worry of threats. We did our job and more in order to earn the award."

Some of the squadron's accomplishments included having a high deployment operations tempo, their ability to build a strong working relationship with the local community, and fostering individual superior performers such as quarterly and annual award winners.

"It was a collaborative effort from everyone in the squadron," said Master Sgt. Marc Leach, 23rd SFS NCO in charge of flight operations. "Our people are constantly doing amazing things every day. Without them, our mission wouldn't be accomplished."

The 23rd SFS manages combat arms, handles the canine kennels, provides flightline security, conducts base investigations, ensures protection of Air Force resources and trains security forces augmentees.

"Our squadron does much bigger things than just 'guarding the gate'," said Chief Cnota. "We are multifaceted and everyone tries to do their best in what they do."

"I am honored to be associated with the 23rd SFS," she added. "It's also the best feeling to see our Airmen get the recognition they deserve."
