The CINC Annual Awards for Installation Excellence was established in 1984 by the president of the United States to recognize the outstanding efforts of the people who operate and maintain Department of Defense installations and effectively use their resources to support the mission. The Special Recognition category, which is a Secretary of Defense-level award, recognizes units, teams, projects and individuals demonstrating exemplary achievement in the spirit of installation excellence.
