As the long holiday weekend brings sunbathing, barbecuing, swimming and other events -- Don't become another summer-activity injury statistic.

As you take this time to relax with family, friends or comrades remain vigilant and keep in mind the hazards behind the fun. Plan your celebration and holiday activities carefully and rely on the same process you use for Operational Risk Management.

Take a good look at the hazards associated with your activities and then assess the impact of each hazard in terms of potential loss and severity. Without complicating the process, do the right thing by taking appropriate actions to minimize or eliminate the hazard. Accept no unnecessary risk.

-Consider sun exposure, heat and dehydration.
-Never use gasoline to start a fire.
-Never swim alone and always use a floatation device when boating.
-Always wear your seatbelts when operating or riding in a vehicle, especially for short trips. Driving long distances can equate to problems. Make certain that your vehicle is ready for the trip and plan rest stops to guard against driving fatigue. Planning for a long trip requires you to allocate enough time to travel to your destination and back without over-extending yourself.
-Leave the fireworks to the licensed experts. Severe injury can result from the use of these devices. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, fireworks cause over 2,000 eye injuries each year. Fireworks are banned on Moody, unless handled by licensed professionals. When watching a professional display, you should view it from a safe distance.

If you are going to drink, don't get behind the wheel of any vehicle--two wheeled, four wheeled or even a boat. Have a designated driver available, call a taxi or call Sober Ride at (229) 257-6237.

Have fun, but think before you act. Make the right choice by staying SAFE.
