Two 824th SFS Airmen awarded Bronze Star Medal for combat actions

Two Moody Airmen from the 824th Security Forces Squadron were recently awarded the fourth-highest individual military decoration for bravery and heroism.

Tech. Sgt. Aaron Winward and Tech. Sgt. Robert Thompson, 824th SFS squad leaders, were awarded the Bronze Star Medal when deployed with the 887th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron as part of the Multi-National Force- Iraq command from Jan. 8 to June 1.

"The 820th Security Forces Group has a mission that often leads us into hostile situations while deployed," said Col. Don Derry, 820th SFG commander. "We're in battle accomplishing cutting-edge things that are unique for the Air Force. It's always great to see our troops recognized, and I'm honored to present these two heroes with the Bronze Star Medal. In addition to these two outstanding sergeants, I am proud of each Airman in the 820th who makes everything we do possible."

The citation for each individual states they were awarded the medal for exceptionally meritorious service as squad leader during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Each sergeant's outstanding duty performance during combat operations in Iraq contributed to the overwhelming success of the command's mission. Their actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect distinct credit upon themselves, the Multi-National Force- Iraq and the United States Air Force.
