AFAF campaign gives Team Moody chance to give back

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- Beginning March 7, Moody Airmen can donate money to one of four charitable organizations in an effort to assist their fellow Air Force members.

The 2010 Air Force Assistance Fund "Commitment to Caring" campaign will run from March 29 to May 7 and its purpose is to fund charities committed to supporting active duty members, retirees, reservists, guard members, and their dependents and families.

"One goal of this program is to have 100 percent contact with all Moody members," said Capt. Amanda Peter, AFAF installation project officer. "They all have an opportunity to donate and give back to other Air Force members, especially with the Air Force Aid Society. The AFAS is one that is relevant to most Airmen because it is always available to them, whether because they have a flat tire or their house burns down."

Moody members can make tax-deductible contributions to any of four Air Force-related charities through cash, check, money order or paycheck allotment.

- The Air Force Aid Society, the official charitable organization of the Air Force, provides Airmen and their families with worldwide emergency financial assistance, education assistance and an array of base level community-enhancement programs. Base Airman and Family Readiness centers have full details on programs and eligibility requirements. Information is also available at www.afas.org.

- The Air Force Enlisted Villages in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., near Eglin Air Force Base, which provides rent subsidy and other support to indigent widows and widowers of retired enlisted people 55 and older. More information is available at www.afenlistedwidows.org.

- The Air Force Village Indigent Widow's Fund, a life-care community in San Antonio for retired officers, spouses, widows or widowers and family members. The Air Force Village Web site is www.airforcevillages.com.

- The General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, which provides rent and financial assistance to indigent widows and widowers of officers and enlisted people, in their own homes and communities. The LeMay Foundation Web site is www.lemayfoundation.org.

By contributing to the above organizations, Airmen can help out their own- others who may have fallen on tough financial times.

"When I was a senior airman, I had some car troubles that I didn't have the funds to fix," said Staff Sgt. Brandon Carey, 23rd Wing Public Affairs broadcaster. "The Air Force Aid Society provided me with that money so I could immediately continue driving to and from work. I encourage others because it's truly a chance to give back to other members of our Air Force family."
