Congress is saying the Air Force needs to reduce the number of Airmen serving in today's service, but the economy isn't exactly in a hiring frenzy. The choice to stay or go may not be as easy as it once was.

Moody Airmen can rest assure that the career assistance advisor here will help them make a smooth transition whatever they decide, whether to stay in, separate or cross-train.

"I wouldn't call staying in the Air Force the right decision because it isn't for everybody," said Master Sgt. Heather Hughes, Moody's career assistance advisor. "It's my job to advise people on their career options and help them make the decision that's right for them."

Sergeant Hughes assumed the role a little less than three months ago and has assisted more than 60 Airmen in making informed decisions such as separating or cross-training.

"If an Airman decides to retrain, I will work step by step through the process with them," she said. " I don't know what jobs may be available at the time they are eligible and since I haven't experienced every job out there, I don't want them jumping feet first into a decision without first looking at all the available options."

In addition to those who are having a hard time deciding, some Airmen who schedule appointments with Sergeant Hughes have their minds set on a new career field and just need a little help from an expert on how to get there.

Staff Sgt. AmyLynn Koehler, 23rd Equipment Maintenance Squadron unit safety representative, is currently working with Sergeant Hughes to cross-train into the safety career field from her current weapons career field.

"I have been given the opportunity to work in a safety environment from my squadron once I was appointed as the unit safety rep, and now I'm hooked, " said Sergeant Koehler. "I can't imagine doing anything else for the rest of my career. Sergeant Hughes was very professional and knowledgeable. She was very helpful and a pleasure to talk with about my options."

There are several options out there for Airmen who are not ready to hang up their uniform just yet, said Sergeant Hughes.

These options include the Air Force Reserves, Air National Guard and commissioning programs. There is also the Blue to Green Program, which allows Airmen to enlist into the U.S. Army at the same pay grade.

The question of staying in, getting out or cross-training can only be answered by the individual, but with the help of Moody's career assistance advisor Airmen can truly make an informed decision when asked.
