Camping, fishing, canoeing and hiking may not come to most people's minds when they're looking for something to do during the weekend in Valdosta, Ga.

But at Grassy Pond, a military-specific recreational facility for active duty members, reservists, guardsmen, retirees and their families can do all of these things and more.

"This is a great way to experience the outdoors," said Karl Whitmer, Grassy Pond manager. "Many people say that there's nothing to do in Valdosta, but that's just not the case. Everyone, especially younger Airmen who may not own their own equipment, should be aware that we have plenty of outdoor equipment for them to rent out."

Open every day from dawn to dusk, the approximately 500-acre site features plenty of options for those who prefer activities on water or on land.

"During the summer, our most popular options are cabin and pavilion rentals," Mr. Whitmer stated. "Along with that, we also have great fishing out here."

The pond is approximately 275 acres. Visitors who plan to fish must have a valid Georgia fishing license and a Moody permit, the latter of which can be purchased on site.

For those who like water activities, there is boating and a wading pool for children. For land activities, patrons have the option of recreational vehicle hookups, tent sites, a playground, screened-in pavilions and a three-mile nature hiking trail.

"We've been coming here for years and really enjoy it," said Marge Blake, wife of retired Tech. Sgt. Fred Blake. "It's just a wonderful facility for military members and they have a lot to offer to anybody who comes out here."

So any individual who would like to be immersed in the outdoors without leaving town can have that experience at Grassy Pond.
