The 93rd Air Ground Operations Wing and 23rd Mission Support Group broke ground in a ceremony Feb. 1 where their new headquarters building will stand.

At 36,000 square feet, the unnamed $11.6 million facility will be nearly an exact replica of the Parker Green Base Support Center, but 75 percent of its size.

"We're looking forward to having a building on this side of the base," said Col. John Horner, 93rd AGOW commander. "Doing so will also allow the 820th Base Defense Group to have more room for their personnel and equipment storage."

In addition to holding the 93rd AGOW and 23rd MSG commander's offices, it will house the offices for the Command Post, Public Affairs, Plans and Programs, Judge Advocate, Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century, Information Protection and Equal Opportunity.

"A lot of time is spent designing, planning and contracting each building," said William Bryan, the project's lead engineer. "It's exciting to see our plans for this project come out of the ground. Having the 93rd AGOW and 23rd MSG in the center of base instead of across base or continually relocating will also be good for operations."

Mr. Bryan added the building will be at least LEED-certified Silver and that they are striving for Gold. The facility will also feature raised floors to allow wires to be stored under the floor.

Although the final floor plans are in review, construction on the foundation has been approved and will start soon. Once the project begins, its estimated completion will be in a year and a half although the contractor is hoping to get it done even sooner.

The new building and the Parker Green Base Support Center will face each other across the Heritage Park.
