Airmen give advice about deployments

Question: What advice would you give to an Airman who is about to deploy for the first time?

Tech. Sgt. Daniel Colon, 723rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron weapons expediter

"I would say to make sure they have an accurate family care plan if they have dependants, especially for the single parents. Something I wish I would've known before I deployed would be to make sure all your finances are squared away. Another thing is to make sure you have good contact with the people back home. You need to have that connection with the real world when you're deployed."

Staff Sgt. Wendyl Waggoner, 23rd Civil Engineer Squadron crew chief

"My biggest pieces of advice would be: be prepared for anything, be prepared to help out and don't just stick with your job because you could be helping out with other shops and their tasks."

Senior Airman Gregory Verbiski, 23rd Civil Engineer Squadron fire fighter

"The best advice I could giveĀ to the next guy is to volunteer, get involved with the United Service Organizations Inc. (USO), and don't seclude yourself. Try to meet new people while you're over there and get involved with different groups."

Staff Sgt. Stephanie Cureton, 23rd Communications Squadron client system technicians NCO in chargeĀ

"I would say to do your research. I wish somebody would've told me to research the area I was going to, instead of just saying 'It's an alright place.' You never know what to expect. You don't know what forces are on the base, the different programs they have available out there or whether you can also get your education if you have the time for it."
