The $10.6 million Child Development Center II at Moody held its grand opening Aug. 15.

The new CDC has a capacity of 280 children and will be used in addition to the old one to accommodate as many children as possible.

"We have had a waiting list of about 230 children for the last 13 years that I have been here," said Dawn Coleman, 23rd Force Support Squadron Airman and family services flight chief. "In many cases it would take up to 18 months before parents got childcare."

The CDC II is an on-base facility that hopes to provide convenient care for Airmen and their families.

It is a seven-acre facility that was funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, and features state of the art security systems. The carpeted areas are built to be low impact if children fall, and the tile floors will stay sterile because they are of hospital operating room quality.

"The CDC II has all the latest safety features available," said Coleman. "Many parents feel it's the safest place for their children to be."

Another feature of the CDC II is the scaled down tables, chairs, sinks and toilets, which are child-sized.

"All of the sinks are at the child's level," said Heather Bryan, 23rd FSS program assistant. "This means that we don't have to use step stools or assist them as much."

The CDC II has rooms designed for each age group, four play yards and security cameras in each room. The facility is located on base across from the old CDC.

"As active duty Airmen, we are on base most of the time and it's great to have my child so close," said Staff Sgt. Amber Poe, parent.

"The CDC is beautiful," she added. "We just checked out one of the classrooms, and they are amazing."

The CDC II was not only well received by parents, but caregivers who will work there. Building the new CDC created more than 100 new jobs.

"I love it," said Bryan. "It's very homey and has a friendly atmosphere for the children.

"You want families to feel their children are safe, so they can focus on their jobs and the mission," she added.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony, balloons were released and children rushed down the aisle into the facility to signify the grand opening.

The new CDC will open for business Aug. 16 to provide Moody families with quality and affordable care for their children.
