The Moody AFB Youth Programs are as a finalist for an award that recognizes youth sports programs for their dedication to providing a positive experience for all participants.

For the second year in a row, they are a nominee for the Excellence in Youth Sports Award. The five winners will be announced later this fall.

"We're thrilled to be in the running again for this prestigious award," said Nikki Bennett, 23rd Force Support Squadron Youth Programs section chief. "Being placed in the same category as top-notch sports programs from all over the U.S. and military installations worldwide is humbling."

The youth sports program offers fall and spring soccer, spring baseball, and summer soccer camps. They plan to add basketball soon. Last year, more than 400 youth here were impacted through their participation in sports.

"Being a nominee for this award highlights everything we do to make sure the kids, parents and coaches have a fun, positive and safe experience," said Amy Thompson, youth sports program coordinator. "We especially want to thank our coaches for everything they've done to even make this possible."

In 2010, 58 coaches logged more than 900 volunteer hours toward Moody youth sports, resulting in nearly $12,100 of savings for the program.

"This program could not impact the youth in the Moody community as much as we do without the support of the volunteer coaches," said Bennett. "Because of their efforts, the youth here are able to learn new skills and build new relationships in a great environment."

To be nominated, Bennett and Thompson had to submit a package to the National Alliance for Youth Sports that highlighted all their efforts. This included the program's structure, their philosophy, volunteer accountability and sportsmanship.

Being one of the 26 finalists for the award means the program automatically earns honorable mention status. Although the award can be applied for by youth programs all throughout the U.S., 21 of the finalists were from military installations.
