VALDOSTA, Ga. --
Valdosta State University players drilled and scrimmaged as Moody members and family watched. VSU invited Service members and family from Moody to watch the scrimmage to show their appreciation of the military.
The scrimmage was held at the VSU athletic practice field and was open to all active duty, civilians and families at Moody.
"The university has a good relationship with Moody and its Airmen," said Whit Chappell, VSU director of development for athletics. "We want to continue and enhance the relationship that we share with the base."
Although the Aug. 26 scrimmage was specifically held for Service members, all practices are open for military.
"We allow all Service members and dependents free general admission to all games," said Chappell. "We encourage all active duty and their families to come and see our athletics."
At the game, Chappell showed some of the military families the facilities and equipment the players use.
"I'm a big Blazers fan, and I wanted to come out here and see the team before the season started," said Rodney Paramore, 23rd Civil Engineer Squadron welder.
During the practice, the families were allowed to walk along the field and interact with some of the players. Paramore and his wife, Brenda, brought along the children of their friend who is on a temporary assignment.
"It's neat to get to see the team practice and bring the children," said Paramore. "It's also great to be able to get so close to the field."
Chappell, who retired after 25 years in the Air Force, said many of the coaches have military ties.
"Many Service members are away from home a lot, and we want to give them a taste of home," he said. "A lot of our coaches have a soft spot for the military. Many of them have served or had family that has, and they like to include the military in what they do.
"VSU has many active duty Airmen that attend classes," he added. "We hope that our relationship with Moody continues."
Moody and VSU hold events to help foster good relationships, and the Aug. 26 scrimmage is just one way they continue this effort.
