Communities across the country, including Moody, came together on Nov.15 to celebrate America Recycles Day.

America Recycles Day is the only nationally-recognized day dedicated to educating the U.S. on recycling.

"This day is when the community gathers together to promote recycling," said Elvis Lane, 23rd Civil Engineer Squadron environmental specialist. "The Air Force celebrates by inspiring recycling to service members and their children."

Moody held recycling day by reaching out to child development center children and helping them learn why it's important to recycle. The program was put in place to motivate children about recycling, who would then encourage their parents to get involved. One tool used was a 45-minute magic trick show geared toward recycling education.

"I try to get the kids excited about recycling the moment I walk into the room because the more fun I make it, the more they will remember it," said Greg Allen, The Magic of Recycling presenter. "When they get older we want recycling to be second nature to all of them."

Allen has performed the "The Magic of Recycling" for 15 years and will be traveling to approximately 12 schools in the Lowndes County area to help teach children about recycling.

Members of the 23rd CES environmental office also went to the youth center and Base Exchange to spread knowledge about America Recycles Day and let people know they have options when it comes to recycling.

"We can teach the community and base the importance of recycling and why preserving the earth is so vital," said Lane. "We just have to try and teach people about the different ways to recycle."
