Moody says goodbye to vehicle decals

Moody officials recently announced the base has discontinued the use of vehicle decals as a requirement for entry.

This announcement falls in line with guidance from Air Combat Command earlier this month for its bases to stop issuing the Department of Defense Form 2220 decals. The policy is expected to be mandated Air Force-wide in March.

"With the implementation of 100 percent identification checks after Sept. 11, 2001, the vehicle decal has become obsolete," said Tommy Harman, 23rd Security Forces Squadron operations support chief. "The days of gate guards waving traffic through solely based on the DD Form 2220 are long gone."

In addition to eliminating a redundant process, the change is expected to free up much-needed security forces assets currently used to produce, issue and verify the decals, said Maj. Lee Curoe, 23rd SFS commander.

"Since 2001, the decals have been a secondary means of identifying approved members for base entry," he said. "Discontinuing the decals will alleviate some of our security forces and USProtect contractors' administrative tasks. It will also be more convenient for base members utilizing rental vehicles."

Although the announcement may seem to be a major shift in the way base security operates, Major Curoe said Team Moody members and visitors will not see a difference in the way they enter the base.

"The way people entered Moody before this announcement is the same way they will enter now," he said. "They still have to show valid military identification or a visitor's pass to access the base and are still subject to the same vehicle search criteria. They are also still responsible for their vehicle and its contents."

Drivers will also still need to maintain state vehicle registration, proof of insurance and a valid driver's license inside their vehicle at all times.

For people who do not have valid military identification, they will still need to receive a pass from the visitor control center at the base's South Gate, but will no longer need a temporary pass for their vehicles.

Since security forces will no longer be issuing decals, current decal holders can remove their stickers at their own discretion. Once a decal expires or becomes unreadable, the person will be required to remove it, said Mr. Harman.

While removing a decal will not impact Airmen entering Air Force bases, many other DOD installations have not discontinued the use of vehicle decals, he said. This will require those without a decal to receive a visitor's pass in addition to their military identification to enter.
