Child Development Center and Moody AFB Patrons,

A few members of our community have expressed concerns about the recent renovations to the Child Development Center (CDC) drop-off and pick-up parking areas. One of these concerns is child safety as patrons travel to and from their vehicles, load and unload siblings, and stow strollers in the rear of vehicles. We believe this to be a valid concern, and we are making this announcement to address our plan of action to the patrons of this facility.

First, detailed and deliberate actions were taken by the Moody AFB Traffic Safety Coordination Working Group to ensure compliance with regulations during pre-construction meetings. In order to prevent the potential for high speeds in this area, a hardened median was built to tighten the driving area and a speed hump was placed in the middle of the drive through area.

Second, please know more plans are in the works to address additional concerns: placing supplementary traffic barriers to deter 3-point-turns where this maneuver was not intended, removing vehicle wheel stops in parking spaces to allow more room between moving and parked vehicles, and the installation of additional speed bumps are all being discussed as potential areas of improvement.

Third, as the installation safety office, we appreciate the feedback we have received. It shows your concern for the safety and well-being of friends and family in our area, and we would like to ask that you continue to bring your concerns to leadership when possible so we can work to address them.

Finally, we understand that even though we are addressing safety concerns in the area, there are still those that will not abide and try to find work-arounds for the hazard control measures that are placed. We ask that you please be courteous of each other and those that are walking with their children to and from their vehicles. Everyone is in a hurry to get home, to work, or to pick-up and drop-off additional children, but please make sure these are not at the expense of the safety of others.

The 23d Wing Safety Office can be reached at (229) 257-3082 if any additional questions or concerns arise as a result of this message.
