MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- The Airmen and Family Readiness Center hosted a “Waging War on Debt” seminar Feb. 10, here as a part of the month-long Military Saves Campaign.
The seminar was open to all military members and taught money saving techniques and planning for financial freedom.
“[This is] educating folks on how to use your money and how to let your money work for you,” said Senior Master Sgt. William Ford, 23d Force Support Squadron NCO in charge of readiness. “We go out and spend our money on coffee everyday but today we’re showing the percentages and how we can take that money and over a relatively short time have something to show for it.”
According to Ford, the goal of today’s seminar is for Airmen to walk away with a plan. To bring this goal to life, the seminar featured Army retired Maj. Steve Sheridan, financial coach, speaker, author, and entrepreneur, who walked through a 10 step process to aid Airmen in creating a financial plan.
Sheridan walked attendees through a map starting with emergency fund and then building on that until one is free of debt, said Ford. The plan starts with where you are now with your finances and debt to maybe in just a few years being out of debt completely, he added.
For one senior noncommissioned officer, the seminar helped her add another tool to her financial toolbox and provided her with financial information to pass on to others.
“There are so many stressors that come along with being in the military and financial stress is one that many of us deal with,” said Master Sgt. Michelle Luckett, 23d Wing equal opportunity superintendent. “Any knowledge I can gain, not only for myself and my family, but to pass on to young Airmen and their families is always a win.”
