    A-10 training increases firefighters capabilities, team cohesion

    The 23d CES responded to an A-10C Thunderbolt II egress training scenario to test their capability in extinguishing an A-10 on fire while simultaneously rescuing its pilot. The training also served as an opportunity for firefighter crew chiefs and their Airmen to increase team cohesion.

    ARMs shop maintain A-10 lethality

    Moody Air Force Base houses 49 A-10C Thunderbolt IIs, each with the capabilities to fire 3,600 rounds a minute. This feat would not be possible without the efforts of the 23d Maintenance Group armament (ARMs) flight Airmen who maintain and inspect the weapons systems.

    Emerald Warrior combat search and rescue training

    A distinct and repetitious sound rumbles through the air above Avon Park Air Force Range, Florida as a U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft violently unleashes 4,200 rounds per minute from its 30mm hydraulic rotary cannon, breathing fire upon its target. The A-10s from the 107th Fighter Squadron at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Michigan, provided close air support for a combat search and rescue scenario involving joint special operations forces during training exercise, Emerald Warrior, Jan. 22, 2019.

    74th FS out guns competition during Hawgsmoke 2018

    Moody’s 74th Fighter Squadron ‘Thunder’ A-10C Thunderbolt II pilots out gunned more than 10 units to win its first-ever Top Overall Team Award during the 2018 Hawgsmoke competition, Oct. 18, 2018, at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. With the best of the best from the close-air support community pitted against each other, the 74th FS showcased their bombing, missile and tactical gunnery capabilities to also garner both the Top Tactical and Top Conventional team awards. The 74th FS’s camaraderie with their total force partners proved critical to enhancing their execution as A-10 maintainers from the 476th Maintenance Squadron, a reserve unit located at Moody, maintained their aircraft during the competition. The 476th MXS also competed and came out victorious winning the Top Hawg award, which is presented to the best maintenance team.

    Warfighters return to loved ones

    During the seven-month deployment the 74th Fighter Squadron flew more than 1,700 sorties, employed weapons over 4,400 times, destroyed 2,300 targets and killed 2,800 insurgents.

    Pilot exemplifies Total Force Integration

    As part of a Total Force Integration initiative, an Air Force Reserve Citizen Airman attended attended the Weapons Instructor Course (WIC) to deploy with his former active-duty squadron. Captivated by the close-air support and combat-search and rescue missions of the A-10C Thunderbolt II, U.S. Air Force Reserve Maj. Matt Paetzhold, 76th Fighter Squadron A-10C Thunderbolt II instructor pilot, joined the ranks of those responsible for effectively integrating multiple weapons systems across the land, air, space and cyber domains.
