Colonel Samuel P. Milam is the commander of the 93d Air Ground Operations Wing, Moody Air Force Base, Ga. The wing consists of three groups with more than 2,800 Battlefield Airmen at 20 locations throughout the continental U.S. supporting eight out of 10 active duty U.S. Army divisions. Subordinate units are the 3rd Air Support Operations Group at Fort Hood, Texas, 18th Air Support Operations Group at Pope Field, N.C., and the 820th Base Defense Group at Moody AFB. The ASOGs provide Air, Space and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance expertise to plan, coordinate and execute the supported ground commander's scheme of maneuver. The ASOGs also provide all Battlefield Weather support to Army units both in garrison and at deployed locations. The 820 BDG provides rapidly deployable, fully integrated, highly specialized forces for active internal and external base defense.

Born in Opelika, Ala., Colonel Milam earned a commission and Bachelor of Science in biology from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1989. In 2004 he earned a master's degree in military operational art and science from the Air Force Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. Colonel Milam's experience includes tours as a Battalion Air Liaison Officer [3rd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment (Mech)] and Forward Air Controller, A/OA-10 weapons and tactics officer, flight commander, assistant operations officer and operations officer, as well as a tour as an A-10 instructor at the U.S. Air Force Weapons School. His distinctive accomplishments include: Top Graduate from Undergraduate Pilot Training, Top Graduate from the A-10 Weapons Instructor Course in 1998, and Top A-10 Academic and Flying Instructor at USAFWS. He was a USAF-level finalist for the 2004 Claire Chennault Award for his work integrating combat air forces with special operations forces. Colonel Milam has flown the A-10A and A-10C aircraft his entire career. A command pilot with more than 3,500 flying hours, he has also flown more than 650 combat hours on more than 190 combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
