The 23d Wing participated in an annual natural disaster exercise, May 17 to 20, at Moody Air Force Base, Ga.

The exercise gives the wing commander the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of current procedures, as well as observe how well Airmen are able to prepare, execute and recover in the event of a natural disaster. In addition, it challenges the wing’s emergency responders though pre-planned scenarios designed to test their training.

“The exercise is important because it ensures all base agencies involved know and understand their responsibilities and how their part contributes to the team,” said Master Sgt. Andre Bell, 23d Wing inspection and planning superintendent. “Just as they would in a real-world event, the units focused their efforts on preparing the protection of aircraft and equipment, which would set them up to help support other agencies if tasked.”

During this year’s exercise, the base simulated being struck by a hurricane and tornadoes. Throughout the week, agencies evacuated aircraft, secured assets and responded to emergency situations including a car accident. Throughout each step, the Wing Inspection Team was present to evaluate the efficiency of the wing in an emergency.

“The biggest thing the WIT looks for when reviewing the wing’s response is how effective communication is between the different units and agencies, which includes areas of preparation, response and recovery efforts,” said Bell.

As a result of the exercise, the wing is able to adjust processes and programs in order to ensure efficiency, ultimately allowing them to execute the overall mission and effectively overcome a real-world natural disaster.
